Smoot, “The Symbolism of the Cupped Hand in Ancient Egypt and Israel: Iconography, Text, and Artifact,” The Temple: Symbols, Sermons, and Settings (Salt Lake City: Eborn Books for the Interpreter Foundation, 2021), 99–116. The English word consecrate is a translation of a Hebrew phrase that, literally translated, means “fill the hand.” The symbolism behind this phrase is that the priest would stand with his hand in the shape of a cup, ready to receive what was offered to him that might aid him in performing his duties. Stephen Smoot explores the importance of this concept in Hebrew and Egyptian culture.
